Why Acting 2 is a Great Class to Take

By: Gracyn Oelke (’23)

Acting 2/Directing.

Not quite advanced theater, but also not a beginner class. Some people take this class to fulfill a fine arts credit because they can’t hold a paintbrush, or they don’t have the energy to learn how to use clay. Others take this class because they took Acting 1 and wanted to further their interest in the theatrical world of HHS. If you’re like me, then you wanted a fun class to take your senior year, but you also didn’t want the competitiveness or intensity of Theater Production Seminar.

In short, Acting 2/Directing was one of the best decisions I could have possibly made for my senior year of high school. This class has brought together the most random group of people; the popular kids, the jocks, the funny idiots, the theater nerds, the shy ones, the loud ones, and those who couldn’t care less about anything at all. Acting 2 has given me friends that I never would’ve had without the class. As we all come together to put on a short play, I have come to appreciate the different perspectives that each classmate brings to the table. We all have different abilities, strengths, weaknesses, and personalities, and this class makes everyone vulnerable to everyone else. It’s such a small group of people, and forced proximity for a whole trimester has undoubtedly made us all closer in some way, shape, or form.

Although some are just here to pass the class, fulfill some dumb credit requirement, or are bored, later on down the road we will appreciate how this class taught us how to be more open and to get us out of our comfort zones.

Thanks, Figg for being the best HHS Theater Department leader there ever was!!
