Hey! My name is Sam Estiban and I am a senior at Homestead. I’ve been participating in the Homestead Theatre shows since I was a freshman and it has been some of the most fun I have ever had in high school. I made lifelong friends and memories that I will never forget in my 4 years of theatre and I am so grateful for all the time I’ve gotten to spend here.
Here are 6 reasons why you should do shows with Homestead Theatre!
- You get to experience the arts firsthand
If you’ve only ever been in an audience at a performance or watching a show from behind a screen, doing theatre at Homestead will be an opportunity to change roles. You get to experience the feeling of live music on stage from our incredibly talented pit orchestra. You get to feel the stage lights on your face. You get to live in the intensity of the vibe on stage. It is all so brilliant, a feeling you can’t get anywhere except the stage. You get to be on stage performing a show that many people love. It is something that everyone should get to experience.
- You will make so many friends!
If you do the shows, you will spend a LOT of time around your cast. Becoming friends is inevitable, but the best kind of inevitable. People who do the shows at Homestead are some of the goofiest, kindest, and most caring-loving people. I have made some of my best friends through Homestead Theatre and I can’t imagine life without them.
- You will become more comfortable in front of an audience/crowd
Speaking from experience, I had crippling stage fright and really bad social anxiety. Talking to people in public was very difficult before I started performing but now after being on the stage several times, I can proudly say that I hardly ever struggle talking in front of people or talking to people in public. If you have trouble with public speaking or just social anxiety in general, give theatre a try, it really works to make you more comfortable!
- Performing is so much fun
This is an understatement, I feel SO alive whenever I am on stage. I have so much fun every time we get to perform a show in front of an audience and I won’t ever forget some of the funny moments we had during shows on stage. Finally getting to perform the show you worked on for months is one of the best feelings in the world. You get to show off what you have been working on! All the memorization, learning dances/blocking, and learning songs finally pays off and it is amazing. I promise you it will be some of the most fun you will ever have in high school.
- If you decide to act, the rehearsal process is so much fun
I look forward to rehearsal every day, it is usually always the best part of my day and I get so excited every time the bell rings at the end of the day and I get to go to rehearsal. During the musical I always have fun learning the music and learning new choreography and dances, it is the best part of the process in my opinion, your dance and singing skills get stronger and you also get to have fun with your friends.
- There are many areas of the theatre that you can be a part of if you don’t want to act
If being on stage isn’t your thing, there are many other things you can do in the theatre department to stay involved, such as costumes, stage crew, makeup, and hair, or even assistant directing and stage managing. All of these areas are so much fun in their own way and it is always a great experience trying new things. Try being in different parts of the theatre, it’s so worth it!
Audition for shows at Homestead or join one of the several crews that work behind the scenes. I promise it will be so much fun!!
