Meet the Artist: Sayla Theirl

Who are you?  What year are you?  What are your interests?
My name is Sayla Theirl and I am a sophomore here at Homestead. My interests include theater, singing, and cooking.

What exactly do you do for Oklahoma!?
I play Gertie Cummings, a really prissy, annoying girl with a VERY annoying laugh. Her whole goal is to date Curly (the main character) to make Laurey jealous. Everyone hates her. I’m also a featured dancer, so I get lots of fun dancing parts.

Why did you join Oklahoma!?
I joined Oklahoma! because I love theater and a lot of my friends do it as well. It’s a very fun welcoming environment and I just love it very much.

Tell us a story from rehearsal, pit practice, or crew session.
A couple weeks ago we were rehearsing the last scene of the show, where Vivian, who plays Ado Annie, fights me. Vivian and I are friends and so we were excited to stage-fight each other because we knew it would be really fun. After blocking the fight, we rehearsed it and we were laughing by the end because we knew that we would never actually fight each other. She’s so fun to be on stage with and I can’t wait to actually perform in front of an audience with her.

What is Oklahoma! about? Why should people come to see it?
Oklahoma! has multiple love stories intertwined. The characters live in the Oklahoma territory, so it’s very western-themed. There are lots of twists and turns in the story, and someone even dies! People should come to see it because the dancing is amazing, the characters are hilarious, and there are lots of dirty jokes.

What do you hope the audience will think about in the car as they drive home after this show?
I hope the audience thinks that the show was very well put together and remembers all of the funny moments on their ride home. I also hope they have a favorite song and that they love the dream ballet.

Anything else you want to talk about?
Come see Oklahoma! at Homestead High School Feb 1-4 2024!
