Hey everyone! My name is Sofia Espinosa and I am a junior here at Homestead High School. This is my second year taking Theater Production Seminar. Last year I participated in an amazing play called The Florida Interlude written by Alexandra Berryman who graduated last year from Homestead. In The Florida Interlude, I played a friendly old Southern lady. After having such a fun experience participating in The Florida Interlude, I knew I had to take Theater Production Seminar again.
For those of you who may not know how this class works, I will give you all a little run down. Theater Production Seminar is a one-trimester class that always runs 5th hour during the third trimester. This theater class is one of the higher-level theater classes that Homestead High School offers. Many of the students who participate in this class have been a part of main-stage productions at HHS. Since this class is for more experienced actors, the students run most parts of the class. Although the students mainly run the class, Figg is still there to advise and she always is willing to guide and help us when needed.
This year our theater production seminar has twelve students. With a smaller class, we decided to all participate in a class show, unlike last year where we had two separate shows. Everyone had different ideas of what show to do; however, we all agreed that Puffs would be a fun show to do. Everyone knows Harry Potter, and Puffs has such a funny twist on the original books and movies. We were planning on producing Puffs for half of the trimester and choosing another show to do for the second half. In the end, we decided to continue to work on Puffs and perform it at the end of May. Puffs is a very long show and we wanted to be able to make it the best we could without rushing.
In Puffs I play a bunch of different characters including Dumbledore, Clumsy Longbottom, Helga, Rita Scooter, the ghost history teacher, professor Locky, Mr. Nick, Hermione, a death buddy, and a random Puff. This show has been so fun to work on because as a kid I was obsessed with Harry Potter. I read all the Harry Potter books at a young age and even played Harry Potter at recess with my friends in elementary school (I was Ron). Not only did I love Harry Potter, I am actually a Puff according to the Pottermore online quiz. Although the characters in the play Puffs can sometimes be annoying, it is cool to see the stories of Hogwarts from a different perspective other than Gryffindor.
Overall Puffs is such a fun show to be a part of. Not only is this show super cool, the people in the class are amazing. Everyone in this class is so friendly and supportive. Every day I look forward to going to my 5th hour because I know I will have a fun time with the people I love. If you have taken other acting classes or have been a part of Homestead Theater, I highly recommend taking Theater Production Seminar!
