Hi! I’m Rachel Anderson and I’m a senior here at HHS. I enjoy anything performing arts-related. I’m in band, choir, I play my clarinet in the orchestra, and I’m in the advanced theatre class, One Act Competition Class. If I’m not in the 700 wing, I like to spend time with my family or walk my dog.
In The Crucible, I play the character Mary Warren. She is the servant in the Proctor household and is one of the girls who is involved in the witch accusations.
I’ve done multiple shows in the theatre department here and I have always enjoyed them and had a lot of fun. One thing that is different from the other plays I’ve done at Homestead is the type of movement we have been doing. It is different than we have in past shows. During auditions, we worked on mirror movements of one another. It helped us get into the thought process of conformity. We also did some character development things that were really cool to research. Most of the characters in this play were real-life people who were there during the actual trials and researching them and how they fit into everything was really interesting.
Do you have any stories from rehearsals?
There are so many stories, but what comes to mind is when we had our poster photo shoot. It was so cool. We all went to someone’s house and took creepy pictures in the tall grass, and then when it was dark they made this giant bonfire. It was so cool and the pictures turned out so good.
All art comments on something/aligns itself with current issues. How does this work comment on current social or political issues and has it influenced you this winter?
I think that this play shows the dangers of conformity. It’s definitely a more serious play. The girls accused anyone who was different from them, which led to mass hysteria. There are multiple examples of this danger throughout history, including the Salem Witch Trials.
I hope that this show will make you think. It’s kinda a scary show. There’s not really a happy ending, in fact, the show ends really sad, just like the Witch Trials actually did. It just shows that some things don’t always end happily and that’s something to think about.

You should come to see the show! Everyone involved is so talented and they have all put in a lot of work. It’s going to be a great show!
