My name is Neela Bergeron. I am a sophomore and I love acting, fishing, singing, and science. I am very passionate about acting and have been doing it since I moved here 5 years ago. It is something I have grown up watching family do and decided to pursue it. In “The Crucible,” I play Mercy Lewis, a young girl who has a lot of attitude. I am best friends with Abigail Williams and I am definitely someone who is not afraid to make you feel bad.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this extremely talented cast and I can’t wait for the memories Homestead Theatre will provide me with.
What brought you to join the cast for The Crucible?
As I said I truly love theatre. I have developed a strong relationship with many of the people here and it has become a new home for me.
Do you have any stories from rehearsals?
My favorite story is from last year in Oklahoma. Even as a freshman, everyone was so kind and welcoming. The songs in that musical were quite catchy and fun and we’d often act it out backstage due to how well we knew most of the songs. I created a lot of friendships that I definitely wasn’t expecting.
All art comments on something and aligns itself with current issues. How does this work comment on current social or political issues and has it influenced you?
I think “The Crucible” shows how fast the world copies and follows someone. Even if you don’t believe in what you are hearing you don’t want to be an outlier, so you follow what everyone else is doing. Likewise, you prioritize friends and popularity over morals.
What do you hope the audience will be thinking about in the car as they drive home after this show?
I hope they are thinking “OMG I might cry.” This show truly is an emotional rollercoaster and it has such a powerful message. It is ok to not follow everyone else. Put your morals first.
