My name is Owen Gudex! I am a Senior at Homestead and I take an interest in lots of things! I am an aspiring screen composer and in addition, a 2024-2025 Co-President of the Homestead Drama Club, musician (member of the Homestead Chamber Orchestra), former two-year Leadership Trainee at Camp Minikani, member of the Homestead Latin Club, NHS Member, English Honors Society member, director & a HUGE film buff. My first Homestead theater production was the 2021-2022 Fall Play, As You Like It!
For The Crucible, I play the role of Giles Corey, who is an 83-year-old man, dedicated to writing his wrongs and saving those he loves most. But I also created the music for the show!
I’ve always been a fanatic towards theater, dating all the way back to 2nd grade. I’ve been a part of the Homestead productions since my freshman year. I’ve also had a blast helping create other Homestead Productions, including last year’s Pride & Prejudice & Oklahoma! Theatre is a hobby of mine, and I will love it forever!
Do you have any stories from rehearsals, practices or crew sessions?
I think the coolest thing I’ve experienced during this show is hearing my music play during a transition for the first time. It made me so happy!
All art comments on something. It aligns itself with current issues. How does this work comment on current social or political issues and has it influenced you?
Playwright Arthur Miller created The Crucible with the intent of commenting on McCarthyism. The show points out the craze and horror of flocking to believe false and disproven accusations. The Crucible remains popular, not because of its social commentary then, but also because of its social commentary now. Participating in this show has shown me how far back this issue has spanned throughout history. It’s wrong, and this show truly emphasizes it.
What do you hope the audience will think about in the car as they drive home after this show?
I hope they find a way to connect the thematics of The Crucible to our present-day society. One simple rumor can explode into a vile series of groupthink. I also want the audience to take into account that these characters and these events were real, and how the horrible events told in this show, aren’t made up.
What’s one thing that is different in this play or rehearsal process than anything else we’ve done in the Homestead Theatre Department?
The message. Usually, a show we perform is one that is fictional. This is dark and real, which makes this play so much more powerful than any other we’ve presented.
