Once Upon a time, at the beginning of the school year, the One Act Competition Class sat down to choose a play to perform. It took a week and ended with an odd choice… a Medieval Morality play titled Everyman. Their task was to rewrite it and modernize it. It was a daunting task, one they argued over and rewrote many times.
Two weeks before the 1st competition, the play was finally finished (as a first draft) and it fell on Figg to cast the show. She couldn’t, so she enlisted the help of the Choir teacher, Mr. Oestreich. Mr. O threw out wild ideas which made it even more difficult, but finally, a cast list was finalized and the One Act class got to work.
It was touch and go the week before the District Competition. The play needs to be 40 long, any longer and you’re disqualified. On Monday, the play was 60 minutes long. On Tuesday it was 45 minutes. Finally, on Wednesday we got it down to 40 minutes and 30 seconds. By Friday it was 38 minutes; we were finally ready for our district competition on Saturday, Oct 26.
Our 1st competition was in Manitowoc and we had a lot of fun. Matthew Seiberlich says it best, “I did not feel scared. I felt relieved, confident, and excited to kick butt at the competition. Overall, we killed it. I think this was the best District performance in three years of competitions, and I am very excited for Sectionals.”
The judges also loved Everyman and passed them on to Sectionals. We’ve spent the past two weeks rewriting the play and reblocking the play. The judges gave us things to work on and we think we’ve created a better version of Everyman for our Sectionals competition this Saturday. This is the competition that determines if we go to State or not. Fingers crossed we make it.
