Public Performance of “Everyman”

The goal of the One Act Competition Class is to select, design, mount, and perform a one act play using both actors and technicians. This class emphasizes production work on a forty minute play that is entered into the Wisconsin High School Theatre Festival.  The whole trimester is taken over with building the set, rehearsing and gathering costumes for the competition, performing for other classes and then finally competing.

We are heading to the State competition this week at UW-Milwaukee and hope you enjoy our show!

Summary

He dies, as we all do in time.  But are we ever really prepared?  Do we have our accounts in order? Everyman is every one of us as we struggle to come to terms with our ending. Who can Everyman take with him?  Who will join him on this final journey?  Or is this a trip we must take alone?

We chose this play because we liked the basic story of it, and loved that we could rewrite it and make it our own.  We are excited to tackle the thought of Death and life and how you live your life.

There is a song we use a few times in this show, “There will be Time” by Mumford and Sons and the Senegalese singer Baaba Maal. The song encourages listeners to embrace the present moment while acknowledging that time will inevitably bring change.

We love this song because it’s Everyman’s journey to accepting themselves in their hour of death.  In the song you will here Baaba Maal sing in the Pulaar language.  It translates to “Listen to me, I want to tell you something, the reason I love you is because, you are the only one who has taught me how to love and appreciate life.” And, “To feel hurt and feel joy, feelings that come from loving you, situations can change between the morning and the night, but our love for each other stays the same it stays strong, it is constant and it remains true.”

When this song is played, Good Deeds is on stage both times.  First, they are in chains because Everyman does not accept who they are and has forced Good Deeds to be bound. The second time Good Deeds arrives a joyful dance happens because every facet of Everyman finally appreciates the beauty that was Everyman’s life.
