Meet the Artist: Owen Gudex

My name is Owen Gudex and my first Homestead One Act production was the 2022 One Act Play, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead. I wanted to be in the One Act Competition Class because it combines two things I love most; theater and competitions! I did Forensics back in Middle School and doing One Act is sort of like an extra show for the season, so I was like “why not.”

What do you do in the One Act class?
I act! In Everyman I play the role of Discretion and one of Everyman’s friends! The play is a morality play about Everyman, representing all of mankind, looking to take human attributes with them to death. This is a devised work of ours, so creating it involved rewriting the script, blocking/choreographing the show, and casting the show ourselves to give Figg input on who we feel should be who.

Do you have any stories from class that you wish to share?
I remember one day where Figg was out and we were all expected to work on something (I forgot what.) We did the thing, but since there was like 60 minutes left of class, we just invaded Mr. O’s Choir Office for the rest of the hour, since we had nothing better to do.

This year’s One Act class is much bigger than last year’s. While last year was much smaller in scale, and more straightforward, this one features a whimsical mix of personality and themes that culminate into a deeper message hiding behind a facade of wackiness. It’s a very abstract show, which is super interesting.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
There are days when I like pickles and days when I dislike pickles.
