What is your recipe for Theatre?

Art has been and always will be a very important aspect of history, our life, and the future. Most people tend to think that art is for entertainment, I mean why else would people watch a movie, or listen to music. But there is a much deeper meaning to art than just entertainment. Art brings people together and spreads awareness of certain topics, we can use these to create a recipe for theater.

Art has always brought others together. In some times, it is a group of kids in a band or a passionate class of painting students. But that is just the surface level of bringing others together through art. Different types of art can attract different types of people. A modern example would be Olivia Rodrigo’s music. Girls of all ages came together to scream their hearts out at the guts and sour tour, but not just because the music was fun to sing. Some would sing Traitor together as they all felt betrayed and were missing someone close to them, others would sing Lacy, in anger or jealousy in their life. No matter what, all of these girls (and boys I guess) come together as they relate to the same things and find comfort in each other. Many people also have a special art in their heart close to them, that has brought them close to each other, this could be a painting someone’s mom got them when they were born or a song two friends always listen to while they are together. These pieces of art are always held close to them in some way.

Art also spreads awareness about certain topics. In APUSH we learned that various artists created and sang songs about topics revolving around the US and its history. For example, a person created and sang a song about equal rights and demanded a change in the country to allow everyone to have equal rights and be on the same level. Many people gathered together to sing this together and it spread throughout the country as many people began to join the movement for equal rights.

So according to these topics, my recipe for theatre is to always think about the meaning of what I am doing, what the production I am putting on means to the audience, and what I will make the audience feel.  To bring people together and spread awareness about topics, I need to be able to use the production and interpret what I think it means and allow myself to perform how the production will positively influence my audience. Even when a play is meant to be funny and make people laugh, that is still something I am doing. I am making people smile and laugh and helping to make their day better. I can also use a funny play to show a deeper meaning throughout the play. A play always has a beginning and ending that tells a story, and you are the one to decide what that story will look like and what it will tell those watching you.
