Meet the Artist: Rachel Anderson

Hi! My name is Rachel Anderson. I am a senior here at Homestead. I love anything and everything music-related, reading, spending time with my family and friends, and of course acting

In The Pirates of Penzance, I play Edith Stanely. She is one of General Stanely’s many daughters. I don’t really know how many there are, but there are a lot of daughters.

I have been doing the musicals since my freshman year. I have enjoyed the atmosphere and the people around me in the shows. I’ve made some of my best friends in theatre and we just have fun with what we are creating. I also get to learn some pretty cool things like stage fighting or the polka.

What is one story you can tell from rehearsals, pit practices, or crew sessions?
I get to throw my shoe at Aiden. It’s pretty funny, but we blocked that scene when he was working on something else, so he didn’t know what was going to happen. So we decided to prank him and have all of the girls throw their shoes at him the first time he did the scene with us (don’t worry we made sure that we wouldn’t hit him). When the time came he came out from his hiding place and was met by us all throwing our shoes. The look on his face was hilarious!

If you know the show, what’s your favorite part?  A scene, a song, anything.  Why is it your favorite?
My favorite part in the entire show is during the Act 1 finale when we all sing Hail Poetry. The pit suddenly stops playing and we all just stand still and sing. It is one of the coolest things to hear. I get goosebumps every time.

What do you hope the audience will be thinking about in the car as they drive home after this show?
I hope that everyone thinks about how cool this show is. I’ll be honest, when I heard that we were doing an operetta for our musical I thought it would be boring and too serious, but as we started rehearsing, I realized how great this show is. The music is so fun (and catchy too). I hope that we show everyone that this musical is entertaining and funny, even if the style of music isn’t something we normally listen to.

Anything else you want to talk about?
Come see the musical! So many people put a lot of work and effort into it and it’s going to be great!
