Meet the Artist: Ellie Bogaczyk

Who are you?  What year are you?  What are your interests?
Hi! My name is Ellie Bogaczyk, and I am a senior at HHS. I am interested in many things including theater, singing, and horseback riding. I have been involved in music for most of my life, and can’t imagine my life without it. I have also been riding horses since age 9, and have never looked back!

What exactly do you do for Oklahoma!?
I play the role of Laurey Williams, who is the female lead in the show. She is extremely stubborn and refuses to admit to herself, and others, that she is in love with the male protagonist, Curly McLain. She is strong-willed and determined, but also loving and nurturing. I have had so much fun being able to make her come to life!

Why did you join Oklahoma!?
I joined Oklahoma! Because I have always loved to perform on stage. It is one of the things that I enjoy the most in life. I have been a part of HHS theater since my freshman year, when I played Amy March in Little Women. I have had so much fun in theater, and have made friends which will last a lifetime.

Tell us a story from rehearsal, pit practice, or crew session.
During a costume run, all of the actors were struggling tremendously with remembering our lines. We hadn’t had this many issues in a long time, but we all decided to brain-fart at the same time. This made for quite the rehearsal, with a lot of laughter, confusion, and some interesting improv. Vivian Reiland (who plays Ado Annie) and I are actually best friends in real life, so playing them on stage is really fun. However, on this particular day, both of us had massive brain-farts and could not remember our lines for the life of us. My favorite part of the day was when Viv messed up a line and I got confused, so I said, “what?”. This girl looked at me dead in the eyes and repeated what she had just said, but yelled it at the top of her lungs as if that would help. Mr. O doubled over laughing. It was quite entertaining.

What is Oklahoma! about? Why should people come to see it?
Oklahoma! Takes place in 1906, and tells the story of Curly McLain, a rancher who just wants the attention of a farmer, Laurey Williams. However, many obstacles get in the way, including but not limited to, a violent farmhand, a box social, and “the little wonder”. Meanwhile, another farmer, Ado Annie struggles to pick just one man (enter Will Parker and Ali Hakim). Overall, the story deals with love, loss, cowboys, and basically every emotion you can think of. It is pretty amazing how all of those things work together and create the show that is Oklahoma!.

What do you hope the audience will think about in the car as they drive home after this show?
“Wow.”

Come see “Oklahoma!” Feb 1-3 at 7pm and Feb 4 at 1pm
