Who do you play? What is your role? Actor, Director, Sewer, Crew, Musician?
Hey all! My name is Maisie Allen and I am an actor in Shrek: the Musical. I play Fiona, the disgustingly beautiful Princess.
Is there something from rehearsals you can share with us?
Of course, I can! Rehearsal is one of the few things in my day that I look forward to. If I’m having a terrible day at school, I usually get over it once I enter rehearsal. Whether my cast mates bring me up or I just forget what was bothering me altogether. It’s amazing “therapy” and a wonderful mental release.
What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?
The most challenging part of bringing the script to life is probably interpreting what each character is really saying and why they’re saying it. Especially Fiona. Half the time I sit there and I say, what is she TALKING about???
What’s challenging about bringing the world of Shrek to the stage (set, make-up, costumes wise)
MAKE UP CHANGES. Holy cow, 4 minutes to turn me GREEN? Y i k e s. The costumes are also extremely intricate if done right, I’m so excited for those. 🙂
What will the audience be thinking about in the car as they drive home after this show?
Hopefully, they will be thinking about the message we were portraying and all the talent that worked on and walked across that stage. All of the cast and crew has their own personal ability that they bring to the show, whether that’s David Blatz’s comedy or Silma Berrada’s energy. It’s all there and very noticeable in each person’s interpretation of their character. When they think about the message, I hope they listen to it. I want little girls and boys to leave this show believing they are beautiful no matter what they look like, and you can always be a hero.
How is this production bringing something new to this story?
I think our formation of the dragon brings something new to the story. I don’t know, I think it’s the coolest part.
Who in the show is most like their character?
Silma Berrada. Hands down.
If you could play any other character in this show, who would it be?
Pinocchio or Farquaad. It would be “lit,” “fire,” “causing flame”????
If someone was going to make your life into a movie, who would play you?
Myself, duh. 😉
When did you first perform?
4th grade in Figg-Seniors plays. I was actually the witch in the play and auditioned with this professional sounding witch voice, but during the performance, I got nervous and didn’t do it. Now I don’t care what people think about my crazy manners.
When you have a five-minute break during rehearsal, what do you spend that time doing?
Probably stare at the essay I have to write for Lang or complain about American Gov.
If you had a magic wand, what show would you do next?
RENT, but that would never happen. OR DEAR EVAN HANSEN. Or Anastasia! Or Heathers!!! Or Next to Normal… OR–
What’s your perfect Sunday afternoon look like?
I’m still waiting to figure that out myself but prolly rehearsal at 8 am :’)
